Education & Training
What Is a Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dental specialist who has completed an additional 3+ years of accredited residency training — beyond dental school — focused exclusively on the gums, the supporting bone structures of the teeth, and dental implants. Not every dental practice has one on staff. At Dental Arts of Boston, Dr. Hamad brings that specialist-level expertise directly to your care.
Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults in the United States, and research continues to link gum health to systemic conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Having a dedicated periodontist means earlier detection, more precise treatment, and a level of surgical skill that general dentistry training alone cannot provide.
For implant patients in particular, the involvement of a periodontist — who is trained in bone biology, tissue regeneration, and surgical precision — significantly improves long-term outcomes. Dr. Hamad handles both the surgical and maintenance sides of implant care, from planning to placement to monitoring.
